On Republic Day, I overheard a teacher, who works in a private school, tell a friend that a student had been expelled for fidgeting during the singing of the National Anthem.  I invited myself into the conversation and asked the teacher the reason behind the decision.  She said it was to teach children discipline.  I then asked her just how such a severe punishment fostered discipline?  She did not answer.

In the name of discipline, what values do we actually teach our children?
